BSA requires a
yearly certification of all scouts for participating in water
activities. We usually perform this test just before summer camp each
year. Even if the a scout is not going to summer camp, it is highly
recommended that they take the swim test.
==============================
BSA Swim
Test:
Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, swim 75 yards/meters
in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes:
sidestroke; breaststroke; trudgen, or crawl;
Then swim 25 yards/meters using an easy, resting
backstroke. The 100 yards/meters must be swum continuously and include
at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.
===========================
The yearly certification test is required for any scout to participate
in any kind of scout activity which involves water . For the troop this
would include: Summer Camp, Boating on Caesars Creek, White water
rafting, or Canoeing.
There are 3 levels of swimming classification;
1 ) Swimmer -- This is the classification whereby the scout can
participate in any water activity without direct adult supervision.
Meaning, the scout can use a one-man kayak or share a canoe with another
scout; may swim with other scouts in a buddy system under the eye of a
"lifeguard". These scouts are allowed to swim in areas where the water
is over their heads.
2) Beginner -- This scout may participate in limited
water activities only under direct adult supervision. If canoeing, the
scout must share a canoe with an adult and my not get in water higher
than chest level. This classification would also prevent the scout from
jumping in the lake during boating on Caesars Creek.
3) Non-Swimmer -- The scout can get their feet wet and
can only participate in water activities if under direct supervision by
the parent. (very restricted activities)
