Scouts dug out of snow in Logan Canyon
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Dozens of Boy Scouts on a camp out designed to teach
emergency survival got a more authentic lesson over the weekend than they
planned for. Nestled in snow caves for the night, the campers ended up buried
in six feet of snow by high winds and had to be dug out by emergency crews.
However, none of the campers were injured.
While the 39 Boy Scouts slept in snow caves in Logan Canyon they had created
for shelter, 64 mph winds created a huge cornice across a ridge line that
collapsed across their string of caves.
"You're pretty cozy inside of them," said Randy Maurer, a father of one of the
scouts. "You're completely oblivious to what's going on outside.
"That was a big shock," said his son, Brock. "It was a wake-up call for sure."
The 500-foot snow wall crashed just before 4 a.m. Saturday, but was luckily
heard by a group of Scout leaders who were sleeping in a trailer instead of
the snow caves.
"That probably made quite a bit of noise, I'm imagining," said Cache County
sheriff's Lt. Von Williamson. "But if they would have all been in the caves, I
shudder to think how long it would be before we would have heard about this."
The leaders used an emergency roadside telephone to call 911.
Just after 4 a.m., rescuers from the Cache County Sheriff's Office, Logan Fire
Department and Rich County Sheriff's Office headed for the campsite in the
popular northern Utah snowmobiling area.
But at 7,400 feet, in blizzard conditions, "it was pretty nasty," Williamson
said. He said whiteout conditions forced the closure of Logan Canyon until
late afternoon.
Williamson said the Scout leaders knew approximately where the caves were, and
emergency crews used shovels and snow probes to locate the campers. Some of
the boys, ages 12 to 16, awoke to avalanche probes poking their bodies.
By 7:05 a.m., all the scouts had been pulled from the caves uninjured.
Williamson said the campers were shaken, but glad to be safe.
"Some were pretty scared, some were only somewhat upset," he said. "It seemed
to depend upon the age of the kids. The older kids took it a little more in
stride."
The Scouts, all from the Smithfield and Nibley area, were given a snowplow
escort out of Logan Canyon on Saturday morning.
